Sassuolo and Palermo shared the spoils in a 0-0 draw on Saturday evening which reflected the lethargy of two teams who have already reached their objectives this season.

There were only two big chances - one for Sassuolo's Simone Zaza and the other for Palermo's Paulo Dybala - in a game in which neither side displayed any great determination to break the deadlock.

The point kept Palermo in mid-table in the Serie A standings, while Sassuolo's safety could be mathematically confirmed on Sunday if Cagliari fail to beat relegated Parma.

Palermo took charge of the match early on, making it appear at times like they were the home team.

Dybala tried to find a key to unlock the home defence on numerous occasions, but there was plenty of traffic to get through and little support from his Rosanero team-mates.

Indeed, Dybala seemed to be the only player with anything to prove in a typical end-of-season game between two sides with little to play for.

Sassuolo did come out of their shells towards the end of the first half, with Zaza and Domenico Berardi combining, but they were unable to find a way through.

There was a marked improvement in Sassuolo's display as the second half got under way, and they created their first chance of note in the 66th minute when Berardi sent Zaza through one on one with Samir Ujkani, but he turned the Italy international's shot behind.

Dybala's moment came five minutes later, but his diving header missed the target from close range, when he really should have done better.

That proved to be the last real opportunity of the game with the sides settling for a point apiece.
