Striker Paul Hayes struck twice in stoppage time to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat as Scunthorpe beat Notts County 2-1 in their Johnstone's Paint Trophy first round clash. Until then League Two County had looked set to book the spot in the second round after leading through a ninth-minute goal from midfield man Richard Butcher who volleyed home a shot from just outside the box. Scunthorpe dominated the game but could not find their finishing touch, a free-kick from Grant McCann whistling just inches wide and a fierce drive from full-back Marcus Williams also narrowly failing to find the target. Early in the second half midfield man Matthew Sparrow brushed the crossbar with a dipping long-range effort and County missed a great opportunity to make the game safe when striker Delroy Facey headed wide with the goal at his mercy. Scunthorpe's persistence was finally rewarded when Hayes headed an equaliser at the far post in the first minute of stoppage time from his side's 16th corner of the game. And two minutes later he struck again with the winner with another close-range header after the County defence had failed to clear their lines.
