Goals either side of half-time gave Shrewsbury a comfortable 2-0 home win against Oldham in the first round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

Shrewsbury were the more dangerous side throughout the first half and might have opened up an early lead when Tyrone Barnett was sent clear by a neat pass from Jordan Clark, only for the striker's shot to be blocked by the legs of goalkeeper David Cornell.

James Wesolowski, starting his first game since January after being sidelined with injury, then tested Cornell from the edge of the box.

Shrewsbury's positivity was eventually rewarded with a deserved 39th-minute breakthough. Clark slipped a pass through to Liam McAlinden and the on-loan Wolves striker drilled a rising shot from 15 yards high into the net.

Oldham eventually tested Jayson Leutwiler on the stroke of half-time when George Green's well-struck shot from 20 yards was beaten out by the home goalkeeper.

Shrewsbury then doubled their advantage three minutes into the second half. Oldham carelessly conceded possession just outside their own penalty area and Barnett took advantage, rounding Cornell to score his third goal of the season.
