Saints bid to avoid the drop

Southampton will hope to ease their relegation fears when Burnley visit St Mary's on Saturday. The Saints, who sit in 19th position, are involved in a frantic battle to avoid falling into League One as they find themselves two points off the drop zone. However, mid-table Burnley will hope to finish the season strongly and will be unlikely to want to help Southampton's survival hopes. Defender Gregory Vignal returns for Southampton after the former Liverpool and Portsmouth full-back missed last weekend's 1-1 draw at Charlton with a hamstring problem.

Vignal return

However, manager Nigel Pearson will have to decide whether to drop England Under 21 midfielder Andrew Surman, who proved an effective replacement at The Valley. Pearson should otherwise be able to name an unchanged side as loan signings Chris Lucketti and Chris Perry continue their partnership at the heart of the Saints' defence. Goalkeeper Richard Wright plays the final game of his initial one-month loan spell from West Ham. Winger Nathan Dyer (ankle), centre-half Andrew Davies (cheekbone) and full-back Chris Makin (hip) remain on the casualty list.
Lafferty absence
Burnley will be without striker Kyle Lafferty and defender Stanislav Varga for the trip to the South Coast after the duo were recently ruled out for the season. Lafferty was rushed to hospital with appendicitis following the weekend defeat to Sheffield United, while Varga - on loan from Sunderland - is set to undergo an operation on his ongoing foot injury. Defender Clarke Carlisle returns from a three-match suspension, so Steve Caldwell and David Unsworth could be replaced.
