Romagnoli, Derlei get Portuguese off the mark

Sporting Lisbon bounced back from defeat at Barcelona in their Group C opener to claim a 2-0 home win against Basel. The Portuguese giants took a deserved 55th-minute lead although the goal came in fortuitous circumstances as David Abraham's attempted clearance looped in off Leandro Romagnoli. Derlei then struck four minutes from time to secure victory and leave Basel without a point after two games. The Swiss visitors enjoyed most of the early possession before Sporting's Joao Moutinho burst down the right in the 10th minute and striker Derlei failed to get enough on his header. Tonel glanced a header wide from a Fabio Rochemback corner but Basel gradually gained a foothold in the game, with Abraham side-footing wide from Marco Streller's lay-off. Miguel Veloso fired well wide for Sporting just before the half-hour mark and they remained on top. Derlei almost latched onto a loose ball after Rochemback's corner deflected into his path, before Basel keeper Franco Costanzo was out quickly to snuff out Romagnoli after good work down the right. Rochemback then drove a 25-yard free-kick narrowly wide and Costanzo did well to deny Derlei in first-half stoppage time after the Brazilian striker had brushed off defender Beg Ferati. Derlei headed against a post four minutes into the second half after Moutinho put the ball back into the box with an overhead kick. But Sporting broke the deadlock shortly after when Abraham blocked Romagnoli's run into the Basel box, only to see the ball loop off Sporting's Argentinian winger over Costanzo. Basel made a positive response, with Benjamin Huggel denied by Rui Patricio after exchanging passes with Streller, before Patricio tipped over Jurgen Gjasula's long-range free-kick. Sporting regrouped, though, and Derlei again headed against the woodwork while Abel fired narrowly off target from Romagnoli's square ball. Derlei then got the goal he deserved when he clipped the ball over Costanzo after collecting Romagnoli's neat through-ball.
