Barnet claimed their first away win thanks to Albert Adomah's audacious free-kick, but heroics from Bees' keeper Jake Cole were needed to seal the 1-0 win over Torquay.
Adomah struck in the 27th minute following a foul by home central defender Chris Todd on Bees left wing Albert Jarrett.
Torquay had a great chance to restore parity in the 32nd minute when Todd was first to Kevin Nicholson's free-kick.
His header was gathered by striker Elliot Benyon but he was ushered away from goal before he could turn and shoot from eight yards.
Recalled United winger Mustapha Carayol went close with shots either side off half-time, the second forcing a low stop from Cole.
The highlight of a string of second-half saves from Cole came in the 83rd minute when he tipped Nicky Wroe's 25-yard effort round the post at full stretch.
