Soccer reborn in the USA

Dempsey - retained his skills and looks!

In coach Bob Bradley, they had a bald man who didn't look like he had a baseball bat hidden up his shirt ready to attack.

That's it then. The American dream over for another four years. As the world keeps turning people will continue to pour scorn over soccer in America, over the MLS, over Clint Dempsey's beard, and everything else attributed to the United States.

Well, they're all wrong. This has been a very successful World Cup for America, and had it not been for the time wasting and the physical bullying of the Ghana team, America might have found themselves in the quarter finals, but they're not and that's life.

The draw against England, and the subsequent topping of the group is a victory for America that would be up there with winning the whole thing. Every lazy English journalist, who no doubt quaff more beers than they've got braincells, shot down the USA team with every cliche going. They were primadonnas, they weren't skilled enough, they didn't have any heart.

Well that proved to be absolute nonsense. The 'never say die' attitude of the Americans surpassed England's lack of passion, their passing was crisper, their flair players actually turned up, and in coach Bob Bradley, they had a bald man who didn't look like he had a baseball bat hidden up his shirt ready to attack.

Bald

So to celebrate America's induction as the people's champions, I have decided to name my top five American heroes from this World Cup.

1. Michael Bradley. The manager's son, the bald eagle, and he lived up to his billing as the best bald, central midfielder in the American side by showing intelligence and invention.

2. Clint Dempsey. The Fulham man played well enough, and was unlucky to have a goal disallowed against Algeria. Probably still the most handsome footballer in the world.

3. Bill Clinton. While he may not have had sexual relations with that woman, he looked dignified and majestic sitting in the stands during the American games, and as such should take a lot of the credit for the American results.

4. Landon Donovan. America's best player, finally lived up to the hype that has surrounded him throughout his career, and proved himself as a truly international class player, rather than just the best of a bad bunch. Even his annoying face can't hide his talent.

5. Robert Green. America's number one, and the fire-starter of America's World Cup party.

Andrew Collins (Liverpool fan) says...

Epitomises America's superiority complex, simple arrogance.
