Primarily a left-back but also proficient in midfield and up front, Jansen made his international debut in September 2005 and was included in Germany's 2006 World Cup squad, though he would make only one appearance.
Jansen is regarded as a tough-tackling but talented ball-player, and at 6ft 3in represents an aerial threat both at set-pieces and from crosses.
The 24-year-old began his professional career at Borussia Monchengladbach in 2004 before spending the 2007/08 season with Bayern Munich.
Following an unsuccessful spell with Bayern, he joined Hamburg after Euro 2008 in a move worth a reported €8million (£6.8m).
Jansen was a member of Jurgen Klinsmann's 2006 World Cup squad when the tournament took place in Germany.
He scored in Germany's 4-0 victory over Liechtenstein in World Cup qualifying in March 2009 to demonstrate his attacking instincts, and has since overcome an ankle injury to ensure he will be travelling to South Africa.
