Manchester United and Chelsea supporters may be baffled - but at the age of 35, Veron is very much a key feature in the Argentina national side.
The Premier League duo splashed out a combined £43million on Veron but he failed to live up to the hype at both clubs, with both moves featuring in a '50 Worst Premier League transfers' run by The Times in 2007.
While it is widely acknowledged he was a big-money flop in England, his forays into Italian football proved successful - he won the Serie A title with both Lazio and Inter Milan and the UEFA Cup with Parma.
But it is since returning to his homeland with Estudiantes that he has firmly restored his reputation as a sublime ball-player with the ability to pick open the most tightly-packed of defences with a perfectly-timed slide-rule pass.
Back-to-back South American Footballer of the Year awards in 2008 and 2009 made his case for an international recall irresistible and Diego Maradona - who played alongside a young Veron for Boca Juniors - obliged.
An international debutant way back in 1996, 'La Brujita' (Little Witch) is in the top 10 for Argentina appearance-makers and played in seven qualifiers.
