Demichelis will play in South Africa still counting his blessings after a collision with Michael Ballack which could have cost him his sight in his right eye.

The duo tangled during March's friendly between Argentina and Germany with Demichelis coming off worse, though he would return by the end of the month wearing a mask for protection after having five plates inserted into his face.

His national bosses weren't impressed by the speed of his return, but it simply underlined his determination to make the World Cup squad this time around after agonisingly missing out on the Argentina party for the 2006 tournament.

Demichelis had made his debut in the year before Germany 06, by which time he was twice an Argentinian champion and playing for Bayern Munich.

Originally a defensive midfielder, he has since moved into the backline and is one of four central defenders Diego Maradona has in his preferred back four.

And having voiced his unhappiness at life in Germany in January, this summer offers him the perfect chance to put himself in the shop window for a move back to his homeland, which appears to be his chosen destination.
