A forward of Kosovan descent turning out for Switzerland, Shaqiri timed his run into the senior fold to perfection.
Uncapped just a few months before the tournament, he was drafted in by Ottmar Hitzfeld to help add pace and flair on the flanks.
A diminutive playmaker, the 18-year-old has bags of ability and will be looking to show the world just what he is capable of.
Big things beckon for the talented teenager and it is widely expected that he will soon be on his way out of Switzerland.
He currently turns out for FC Basel, having graduated through the academy ranks at St Jakob Park.
Shaqiri is under contract until 2011, but a sizeable bid may tempt his current employers into a sale.
He has already shone for Switzerland at Under-17, Under-18 and Under-21 level.
