The man known as the 'Rock of Gibraltar' has represented his country consistently since making his debut in 2001.
Since then he has figured in the 2002 and 2006 African Cup of Nations and was at the heart Ghana's defence at the 2006 World Cup.
Mensah, who has captained the Black Stars on a number of occasions and is currently vice-captain, is known for his powerful defending and aerial strength.
By the time he moved to Sunderland in 2009, he had been at nine clubs in just nine years including spells in Italy, Switzerland and in France, where at Rennes he really made his mark.
He then went to Lyon where he was blighted by injury and was loaned out to the Black Cats. He impressed at the Stadium of Light in a handful of appearances, limited by persistent niggles.
Nonetheless, he remains a key member of the Ghanaian squad and coach Milovan Rajevac will be desperate to have a fully fit Mensah available.
