Iwamasa looks certain to be Japan's fourth-choice central defender behind Yuji Nakazawa, Tulio and Yasuyuki Konno.
He studied to become a maths teacher at university in Tokyo but later dispensed with the schoolbooks in favour of a pro soccer career.
The tough centre-back has been a key part of the successful Kashima Antlers side of the last few years and was voted into the J.League Best Eleven in 2008 and 2009.
Now 28, Iwamasa only arrived on the international scene after World Cup qualification was secured, his debut cap coming in a friendly win over Scotland last October.
However, he has done enough to persuade Takeshi Okada that he can make the grade at the World Cup if required.
