This could be a big tournament for Santa Cruz with his future at Manchester City the subject of plenty of speculation after Mark Hughes' departure from the manager's chair in January.
Both Hamburg and Arsenal have been linked with a move for the striker after he failed to impress during his debut season at Eastlands, partly down to tendinitis in his knee and a calf strain which kept him on the sidelines.
Santa Cruz's participation in the 2006 World Cup was also in doubt but he recovered from a knee injury to compete in Germany and played in all three of Paraguay's games as they bowed out in the group stages.
His appearances in Paraguay's qualifying campaign, however, were limited. The 28-year-old only featured in four games to allow the likes of Oscar Cardozo, Nelson Haedo Valdez and Salvador Cabanas to shine.
Cabanas won't be in South Africa after being shot in a bar in January, an incident he is on the way to recovering from, but Borussia Dortmund striker Lucas Barrios has now joined the squad to take the pressure off Santa Cruz.
The former Blackburn and Bayern Munich forward is still the most high-profile name in the Paraguay squad and should relish the chance to re-establish his reputation on the world stage.
