There is often a surprise name in any head coach's World Cup selection and Gomez was Bob Bradley's shock inclusion.
While the likes of Eddie Johnson and Brian Ching both missed out, Gomez, who is one of two Mexico-based players, made the grade.
Bradley may even have made up his mind just 24 hours before finalising his selection following Gomez's headed goal against Czech Republic.
The 28-year-old scored in USA's 4-2 defeat in Connecticut and with his striking rivals failing to score, that goal could have convinced Bradley.
Gomez's club form for Puebla also bolstered his case after scoring 10 goals, becoming the first American to top a foreign league's scoring charts in the process.
He earned his first cap for USA in 2007 and names the likes of Los Angeles Galaxy, Colorado Rapids and Kansas City Wizards among his former clubs.
