A legendary figure in Mexican football, Marquez will be hoping to enjoy a fitting swansong this summer before retiring from international football.
The Barcelona defender announced in March that he would be quitting Mexico after 13 years of service and almost 100 appearances.
He may not even be a regular starter at Camp Nou nowadays but he retains the presence of a true great and will be a leader for his country in South Africa.
Now 31, Marquez brings experience to his role as well as the skill and assurance that marked him out as a special talent at a young age.
Marquez, who has plied his trade in European club football since 1999, is capable of playing in midfield but it is at centre-back that he has largely made his name.
Although not the tallest, Marquez is good in the air and physically strong, while he is also composed in possession and the fact that his goal tally has reached double figures shows that he is not only effective in his own penalty area.
