Afolabi is an imposing centre-half who first came to prominence in the 1997 UEFA-CAF Meridian Cup, catching the eye of Belgian side Standard Liege who snapped him up from NEPA Lagos.

After three seasons in Belgium he secured a loan move to Italian outfit Napoli, but failed to break into the first team there.

Since then he has played for Austria Vienna, Sochaux and his current side Red Bull Salzburg.

After starring in the 1999 African Youth Championship, Afolabi made his full international debut in 2002 and has since won over 20 caps. He was also part of the Nigeria squad that played in South Korea and Japan in 2002.
