The former Manchester United striker is now his country's talisman and he will need to perform in South Africa is they are to progress beyond the group stages.
Forlan has become one of the most feared strikers in Europe in recent years, having won the European Golden Boot on two separate occasions.
This was in stark contrast to his spell with Manchester United. The Premier League giants paid Independiente £7million for him but he scored just 10 goals in his spell at Old Trafford before being sold to Villarreal in 2004.
His first season in Spain saw him finish as top scorer in La Liga and he has not looked back ever since. Atletico paid £20million for him in 2007 as he replaced Fernando Torres, who joined Liverpool.
Forlan is now leading from the front for Uruguay and was top scorer in the qualifying campaign with seven goals.
Over 20 goals for Uruguay is a sure sign that Forlan is more than capable of performing at the highest level and his country will be hoping he can lead them to glory.
