Striker Smeltz poses New Zealand's main goal threat and may be their man to watch this tournament.
The 28-year-old comes into the tournament in good form. He finished top-scorer of the Australian top division this season with an unprecedented 19 goals and also bagged a highly-impressive tally of eight in five World Cup qualifying games.
Smeltz made his All Whites debut in 2003 and is now comfortably one of the first names on Ricki Herbert's World Cup squad list with an international record of over a goal every other game.
Despite being born in Germany, Smeltz began his career in Australia. He was offered a contract by Mansfield Town in 2005 but managed only five appearances in League Two, moving into non-league with AFC Wimbledon where the striker scored for fun.
He only lasted a season with the Dons as his 26-goal haul persuaded Halifax Town to take on the Kiwi but the step-up to Conference level proved to be difficult for Smeltz who could score only two goals in 31 appearances.
He swiftly returned to the Southern Hemisphere with Wellington Phoenix.
Currently playing for Australian side Gold Coast United, the World Cup may be an opportunity for Smeltz to persuade a club to let him try his hand at English football again.
