Capello: Flopped in South Africa
Fabio Capello's controversial 'Capello Index' ratings of England's World Cup performances have been published.
The Italian coach caused uproar prior to this summer's showpiece in South Africa when it emerged that he intended to rate the showings of his players after each game, and make his thoughts public knowledge.
He was eventually persuaded by the Football Association to shelve that idea, as it was decided that scores should not be handed out until the tournament was over.
That time has now come and, with England having fared dismally on the world stage, the results have been eagerly anticipated.
The ratings, which are used in a fantasy league game, make for intriguing reading, with Capello's take on events in South Africa raising a few eyebrows.
Unsurprisingly, Robert Green's horror show in England's opener against the United States, in which he let a tame Clint Dempsey shot slip through his grasp, sees him finish bottom of the pile when it comes to the Three Lions.
Joe Cole and Gareth Barry also failed to impress, while Wayne Rooney's average score over the course of the four games he played was topped by the much-maligned Emile Heskey.
Of those at the opposite end of the scale, Jermain Defore takes the spoils as England's most effective performer, while Shaun Wright-Phillips and national skipper Steven Gerrard also deemed to have done well.
It is, however, worth pointing out that Defoe's average score of 62.47 still falls some way short of the 65.77 awarded to Uruguay's talismanic frontman Diego Forlan, the man rated as the best player at the tournament by Capello.

I agree with Paul Murphy. Lets at least try a few players of a different nationality. If a player has lived in England for long enough to qualify, they sould be given a chance. They obviously love the country. This is surely an untapped resource of quality players that we should be exploiting. It was talked about a while ago and maybe it should be talked about again

It is not Capello who's to blame it's the overpaid , unfit , halfwits he took with him who seem to be obssessed with fame , fortune and wealth rather than ability and pride ; I am ashamed to be a part of this sport!

Quite a few managers in the world cup who took their respective teams a lot further than England had the decency to resign when expectations never materislied, Capello said he expected England to reach the final and that statement should have seen him resign. His ratings of players is utter tripe, because if he scores nil in the eyes of almost every passionate England fan, then how the hell can he give others a mark.

I dont think this list should ever have been released and i seriously doubt capello wanted this but to criticise capello for having such a list baffles me, most managers have computer analysis on there players and other players the only difference is the players never get to see these stats there pvt and this has became public

Last year I watched the England Ladies team being thrashed 6-2 by Germany in the Euro final...then we sawt the U-21s beaten 4-0 by Germany in last years final...now we`ve just seen England beaten 4-1 by Germany at the world cup....the writing has been on the wall for some time now that our whole system is wrong...nobody has done anything about it and blaming Fabio is just a sign that people do not understand the problem. Less domestic matches and grass-roots work needed

I don't know what all the fuss is about, Fabio Capello is an excellent coach and has the trophies to prove it. The index just reflects the poor performance of all the England players and maybe they need to take this onboard and recognise that they have to start playing as a TEAM. It is an excellent index as the top 10 reflects the best players in the tournament! Fans have short memories, this was the same team that apparently did so brilliant in the qualifiers!!!!

It is alarming to see people talk about capello playing players out of position. Many top players at the world cup played out of position and yet delivered. Remember Mueller of Germany and Villa of Spain just to mention a few? England was not good enough, simple and the earlier the players and fans realise this, the better.

Capello has rated all the players he must have gone to specsavers that is the only way he could have got it so wrong poor glasses, l will be generous and say no player rated higher than 20% but rated as a team then it should be 10% as it is a team game and none of the prima-donnas know it. As for an English manager no-one wants it because the F.A. won,t support them. We need to limit overseas players concentrate on English youth in the premiership academies that way in 4-8yrs. time we will have proud English Lions pulling on England shirts. Oh and clubs will save a bundle in wages. Ask yourself how many English players are in France,Italy,Spain,Portugal,Holland,Germany, answer 0 none zilch zero.

Why this list was even published baffles me. It shouldn't exist as it conflicts too much opinion. South Africa 2010 should be forgotton from an English point of view, and if changing FA staff around is what turns the corner then it should be done.

Perhaps the problem isn't so much the coach but the English Premier League. Here is a league of more foreign players than English - teams, e.g. Arsenal, have picked 100% foreign teams. This has probably impacted negatively on the English players. In addition, perhaps the likes of Rooney (who had a rubbish tournament and should give FA back its money - he got it under false pretences of going to WC to play football!) only look good in a team of foreign players - because the standard of English players has dropped.

Good for Heskey. The man was being put down for every effort. When in actual fact he was one of the hustlers on the pitch. Overal these scores are sad. Watching them is as if their is no desire to play for their country. No pride. It should be an honour to wear the three lions. And not many players deserved to be wearing it.

Something is amiss, because I and millions of other English fans gave each player a zero rating so there should be a stewards enquiry to see who is wearing the right boots. Capello scored minus 10 by the way, but he will still get his 6 million quid whilst many a fan will be kicking the pawnbrokers balls.

I don't understand why people are slating Hesky's score? He got an assist, that is one thing Rooney didn't do! They both didn't score and Rooney played more mins, shows how useless he really was during that tournament! Think people need to be a bit more analytical and not blame one person. Lampard,Gerrard and Terry were just as bad aswell... Let's see you slate those 'superstars'!

Capello should not be the manager, the basic team is the same team that didn't get to the Euro's so all knew it wasnt good enough, individuals are great players but they don't make a team, England should have a English manager, a proper one not like Keegan and Venables, someone like Harry Redknapp who knows football and knows English football and players better than anyone

I'm still missing something here. I honestly can't believe how and why Diego Forlan has been credited with the Golden Ball award as the BEST player in the tournament. I am shocked and stunned that many people think along those lines. . . . and then it becomes apparent that Mr Pat Capello thinks likewise according to his dossier. Only then did I realise I was right all along - cause Pat knows nowt - JUST LIKE THE REST OF THEM WHO BELIEVED FORLAN WAS TOP OF THE POPS..

It makes me laugh how all the arm chair managers pipe up about who should get what score etc. Cappelo's index is not the definitive answer over who is the better player. (although Forlan had a great world cup and Rooney had a stinker, who would you prefer in your team??). It is just based on his opinion and worked out on passes, mistakes, shots etc. I think everyone needs to get over the c**p that was our World cup campaign and look forward to another Premier League season when all the Rooney's, Lampard's and Gerrard's of this world will be hailed as the best in the world again. Then they will play in the 2012 euro qualifiers and be s**t again. Conclusion - We were rubbish in the WC and its time to get over it..

All I'm going to say is, what is this criticism of Capello? Clearly he isn't going to rate his players extremely low that they deserve, what is that going to do to the team morale? Also how can you call him a crap manager when you look at his record? A flawless qualifying campaign and also look at his club record, get off the mans back, he's the best manager you all have had!

Did someone really just say "not sure how much we can learn from the Italians"? One bad World Cup and the nation is suddenly on a par with North Korea? Here are just a few things we can learn from the Italians: 1) That coaches have to be qualified. 2) That you have to earn the right to play pretty football by building on a solid defence. 3) That people are allowed to think about the game rather than just spout clich¿ 4) That just because a manager fails once, doesn't mean his career is over. 5) That technique is more important than the myth of 'passion'. 6) What it feels like to have won 4 World Cups. 7) How to pass the ball. 8) How to look cool as a player rather than like a hod carrier. 9) How to behave like professional athletes rather than spoilt brats. 10) Did I mention, what it is like to have won 4 World Cup

Am I reading this right...our illustrious manager wastes his bleedin' time point scoring players!!?? What the hell for? Does he have short term memory loss or something (come to think of it he must have as he seemed to forget how dire Rooney was in each game thus selecting him for the next one!) Good grief, why oh why are so many people intent on over complicating a simple game!

Heskey played better than Rooney. Rooney did nothing. At least Heskey set up Gerrard for his goal against the U.S.
