Shawcross: England call
Fabio Capello has included Ryan Shawcross, Leighton Baines and Stephen Warnock in his squad for England's friendly against Egypt next week.
Shawcross has been rewarded for his impressive performances in the centre of Stoke's defence this season despite being sent off against Arsenal on Saturday evening.
The 22-year-old, uncapped at international level, reportedly left the Britannia Stadium in tears after being red carded for a sickening challenge on Aaron Ramsey.
Capello and trusted assistant Franco Baldini even delayed the announcement of their squad by 40 minutes to have one last discussion about Shawcross' presence given the severity of the injury Ramsey is thought to have suffered.
Capello already knew that he would be without Wayne Bridge after the Manchester City full-back made himself unavailable for selection earlier this week in the wake of allegations over John Terry's affair with the mother of his child.
And with Ashley Cole facing a race to recover from a broken ankle, there has been plenty of discussion about England's options on the left side of defence.
Baines of Everton and Warnock of Aston Villa have been given the opportunity to impress, while the versatile James Milner and Gareth Barry are also involved.
Warnock's Villa team-mate Stewart Downing and Arsenal winger Theo Walcott are also in the squad, but there is no place for Chelsea playmaker Joe Cole.
Capello will be looking for a good performance against the African champions at Wembley on Wednesday as he continues to build towards the World Cup this summer.

Such a pity for Shawcross, should be the proudest day of his career being named in an England squad but will be overshadowed by Ramsey's broken leg. Shawcross is not a dirty player and it is one of those things, hopefully it wont change his play that has got him into the England squad. Thoughts with Ramsey and well done for Pulis for getting his priorities right, preferring to talk about Ramsey and sympathy for the lad rather than losing a footballl game.
