England manager Fabio Capello has accused John Terry of making a 'big mistake' with the comments made at Sunday's press conference.

In the wake of last week's disappointing goalless draw with Algeria, defender Terry outlined his grievances to the media.

The Chelsea captain indicated he would confront Capello at a team meeting at their Rustenburg base.

However, reports claimed on Monday that, after being persuaded otherwise, Terry opted not to speak out at the meeting.

In response to Terry's comments, Capello said in a television interview: "When you speak, you have to speak privately, not with you [the media].

"This is a big mistake. This is a very big mistake.

"I know sometime some players want to speak more with you than with the other players. The mistake is you have to speak with the players, with me, with the dressing room.

Big mistake

"It was a big mistake, but I hope that sometime out of the big mistake will come the big performance.

"I hope that this will be important for the next game."

When quizzed on whether clear-the-air talks were scheduled, the Italian coach said: "I spoke with some players.

"I think it's only John Terry said this. Nobody has spoken with me about problems.

"My door is open always. If you want to speak with me, you can speak with me.

"Every time we have a meeting I say to the captain 'any problems?'.

Cole

"Just yesterday, John Terry said this. I don't understand why."

England face Slovenia in Group C on Wednesday aware that a victory is likely to be essential if they are to reach the last 16.

And for the crunch clash, Terry championed the involvement of Joe Cole, who has yet to feature in South Africa.

But Capello stressed any selection decision remains with him, adding: "It is another mistake when you speak about one player because there is no respect for the players that play before.

"Always the players think individually, I have to think about the team, it's important. When you speak you have to be careful.

"I respect Joe Cole. But he is one of the 23 players I have here."

England will be returning home come Wednesday. There is a big difference between the Premiership and the world cup. They have failed to represent us. Even if they go through to the next round Germany will tear them to pieces.

Terry has done no wrong. There is unrest in the camp and he stood up to the plate where others did not. His hopes of change from a meeting were dashed by Capello refusing discussion on major issues. Sad John noticed there was no creation in the team and had a suggestion! After all this, the players walk away with boos in their ears - Capello with a £10 million payoff. Who really benefits from failure? Players have views and should be allowed to contribute-this is not 13th century Afganistan. The media are treating this biased and supporting management so no change there.

England need to start playing to an England game plan. Peter Crouch should start alongside Rooney. 2 wide players (one of them being Gerrard) should provide width and bang in crosses into the box, with the help of marauding full backs. Lampard making late runs and Barry holding in midfield should make for a formidable English line up. Regards, Ebrahim

Terry is just voicing the nations opinion, Joe cole must start against slovenia, we have had a lack of creativity in the past two games and joe cole can bring that to the table. Gerrard is wasted wide left, his best position is playing behind the striker. Fair enough Terry should have spoke privatley to capello, but it needed to be said!

Louise Candel (Chelsea fan) says...

John Terry must have been given permission by someone to talk to the press, why was it him and not Steven Gerrard? If players cannot express an opinion then the manager becomes a dictator and all respect is lost.

I feel JT is being made a scape goat. He is speaking out about the team he believes in players he believes in. He has a right to air his views especially when Gerrard is not doing this. Gerrard is the captain but i have not once seen him speak to the press apart from straight after the Algeria game. should it not be him that is doing this for the team that he is captain of or does he not want to be captain..???..... saying that we still have a change and we all right behind you and singing for ENGLAND, I still believe... Do YOU!!!

everyone knows that john terry is still the england captain!! what he said needed to be said, why should he sit quietly untill we exit the world cup just so as not to hurt peoples feelings!!!

Phil Martin says...

john terry's ego is still hurting after being dropped as captain it's his fault he's not captain but he just cant let it go some player's might be upset or not happy with whats going on but you just put it to one side and get on with the job,but terry trys to get other player's speak out against capello because he dare'nt,he's not a leader he's an arrogant tosser that's still crying because he's not captain and is most probably the trouble maker in the camp, drop him capello.

I think Terry was right to say what he said. They all do need a wake up call otherwise they will be on the first plane home! I think Capello should start with Joe Cole at least then he may well give us a bit of width. I completely agree that both Lampard and Gerrard have done nothing. I also think Capello should drop Rooney as well, as he's done nothing either. However, he's not got the balls to do this! Why not start with Crouch and Defoe, at least when Crouch has come on he's won us the ball, albeit if it has been too late to do anything about it. As for Defoe, he looked lively when he came on the pitch on Fri and did look up for it, about the only one that did! Time for a change, both players and the formation if we are to go any further!

All this turmoil, and lack of success in the first two games of the World Cup! I'd say that the England squad is looking a lot like Italy right now. The Italy that has won 4 World Cups. I think Capello knows exactly what he is doing , and I think England will destroy Slovenia and win there group. Capello didn't forget how to manage a football team overnight,I think he knows exactly what he's doing. But then again I'm from Canada, if its not played on ice with a stick and a puck, what do I know! England will go through, you guys all need to relax, and Joe Cole will be in the line-up, that's a no-brainer.Go England!

Again this is all the fault of the FA. It seems ridiculous that a player can do a press conference without the FAs consent. Its the FAs job to protect the exposure of inner wranglings. People think its great that everyone knows of the problems but you have to think that this only helps the opponents, because any good team will capitalise on the weaknesses. The Slovenians will wind Rooney up tomorrow and he will see Red! Apparently, Rooney asked Capello if he could do some extra training on his own after a training session. Cappello refused! This sounds ridiculous especially due to the fact the players are trying to get used to these new balls.

John Terry has been made the scapegoat and it looks like he has been left out to dry by his team mates, lets face it Capello has gone against HIS rules, take people who are fit .Ferdinand ,Barry,King ,thats a joke and play people in form,so wheres Harts chance, why no Adam Johnson how can he be playing Heskey ,it`s a joke. Drop Rooney ,Lampard and Heskey and try with Crouch ,Defoe and Joe Cole and bring in Dawson for Carragher ,give England a chance for the people and not for himself.

Debs Jeffrey (Leicester City fan) says...

John Terry was wrong, it doesn't matter whether he should be captain or not. He should never have sat in front of the media and said what he did, without first speaking to Capello or the rest of the team. This should be no surprise, the team Capello is playing or the system. Is it not roughly the same team and system he's used throughout his time of managing England. Did we not get through the qualitfyers quite comfortably. So why now is it not working? I think maybe we should start looking at the players. They earn more in year than I could wish to earn in a lifetime and yet they showed no passion, no spark and some of them might as well have stayed in bed for all the use they were. They need to stop blaming each other and the manager, and take a good long hard look at themselves. They play for their country and should be proud. Come on England, give us something to cheer about on Wednesday!!!!

Lee Stefan says...

A similar thing happened at the Rugby Words Cup in 2007. Brian Ashton was treated terribly, especially by Dallaglio, but at least a lot of it was done via the changing rooms. After the clear-the-air talk, as we all know, the team went on to lose to RSA in the final. Totally unprofessional, disrespectful to the coach (certainly disrepectful to Brian Ashton the way he was treated) but nevertheless, it did the trick? Maybe, this could have been dealt without media involvement? Are footballers/sportmen paid so much that they can question their boss - publicly? It's all wrong!

This is England, Not Chelsea. Terry cannot bully or manouvre people the way he does with his club side. Capello is the boss not this spoilt tit. Good on Capello.

Gareth Burton (Birmingham City fan) says...

Where was CAPTAIN Steven Gerrard? Where was VICE CAPTAIN Frank Lampard? Why would you let a player you have taken the england captaincy from go out and do such an important interview? In all walks of life things can be said and done to manipulate a situation, for all we know this could have been set up by capello so he could come out next day and give JT a dressing down to show that he is still the boss and has full control of the changing room!!!!! And because we all want to win the WC and we are so short of quality at center half Fans and media wont be in such a rush to call for JT's Head and get him sent home, and lets be honest he is the best CB we have at the world cup. Just a thought!!!

The way I saw it was that Terry simply answered the question as to whether it was possible for players to vice concerns... He said they owed it to thmselves IF they had concerns and that they had meetings at which this could be done...I don't recall him saying he was going to. And let's face it...he's probably just thinking what we all know, Capellos stubborness is sending us home early

Ray Smith (Newcastle United fan) says...

I think that JT should shut up, play football, he has no comment and do his job as others have said. I find it remarkable that a person with the kind of ethics and moral standards displayed to all by our media should ever want to step in front of any press and say anything of value since the man has bee shown to all to have little regards for moral values and principles which we the unpaid fans have to live by. He has the luxury of being able to live and work as a highly paid proffessional footballer seemingly without reproach or redress for some of the things he has done and said, sorry if i was Capello what he has done should be dealt with in the same way France dealt wiht Annelkas spat at his manager both are undermining the respective country managers and both should be reprimanded accordingly it seems that the french fa have got bigger alls than the pathetic English FA in not reminding our countries players who they play for and what they SHOULD be doing. Interesting that this is 2 chealski players, says a lot for Ancelottis style of management doesnt it!!. I have to agree with all in the decision to play cole lets hope wedneday is sucessful and we scrape through,

Critical Jay (Real Madrid fan) says...

I will have to agree with what "Big Phil" said earlier......English football players want to play their own brand of football and practically want to run the team. That is why their football seems to be going nowhere at this moment in time, they need to relax and listen to their coach and trust in his decisions. Terry should have applied for the coach pole if he wanted to make decisions relating to who plays. What the England team needs, is to perform and stop blaming the coach's decisions.
