Yes, Long Jim Barnes may have won it in 1919, that's probably why the report says: "No player from the Old Continent has won the season's fourth major in 89 previous stagings." Amazing what you find if you read it!! By the way, at the time Jim Barnes won it in 1919, I think he would certainly have been CORNISH, not ENGLISH!! (In they days before occupation, a Cornishman would no sooner admit to being English than would a Welsh, Irish or Scotsman today, me andsomes!)

I have backed Adam Scott for every Major in the last six years if he wins on Sunday I just about break even. Either way I think a ozzy will win.

I think YOU Kevin Archer will find that Mr Jim Barnes was born in England but was actually of American nationality due to his residence in America. Extremely sorry to burst your little bubble.

This will be about to change. Garcia will be USPGA champion come sunday. Keep one eye on his spanish counterpart pablo larazzabal a neat 500/1 shot, people, there may be a surprise in store.

I think you will find that james barnes won the first two uspga championships in 1916 then a gap because of ww1 and then won again in 1919.He was ENGLISH is that not a european.

I could not agree more with the statement of Quick Draw, or snap hook as it sounds you have got to me! Get a second major as well as the Open Championship somewhere other than Great Britain. The european players and courses are good enough to hold such an event and put European golf firmly on the map and competing with state side! I hope you get rid of that quick draw so we can call you slight fade! Come on Westwood!

I cant believe this!! Have any of you looked at the world rankings? We have 6 europeans in the top 20! and one of them is Justin Rose!? J B Holmes all the way!

Yen chong Yap says...

If the Americans dare to cross the Atlantic and take more than half the of the OPEN titles since 1968, we see no reason why the Europeans, especially the British cannot do the same on American soil The time has come now. There is no less talent in European than in the USA and so you European golfers go and bring the 2008 USPGA to Europe and let year 2008 the floodgate to more US majors into the hands of the Europeans

The standard of golf on the european tour has hit new heights! Although the USPGA Champ is the last major of the season and lets face it the least exciting! Its now time for one of our boys to step up to the mark, this is the best oppertunity in a long time, I predict a European victory and dont care who, but keep an eye on Robert Karlson!

Russ Evans, regarding your comment of more majors in europe! Lets have a major in europe and not restrict it to the UK! I suggest Ireland, Spain, France or countries that have helped with the Ryder Cup! The Open Championship is the greatest championships in the world, why not just keep it at St Andrews and every other year continental europe? Cmon Monty, you know its makes sense!!

Yen chong Yap, the reason any european players havnt won is because they are simply not good enough otherwise they would win more majors, and as for Mr Evans comments you are obviously on a different planet than the rest of us. Westwood has come as close as he ever will. More majors in europe? Why would we embares ourself more by showing the world how 2nd class our golf courses really are?

Come on all you golf lovers! Give your view! Westwood to win USPGA!

I hope that the European players participating in the coming USPGA do not have the attitude of "well, 89 years passed no European had won it, so it does not matter if i do not win it" but instead, should keeping telling oneself "well, 89 years passed no European had won it, I will win and make history"

We need more Majors in Europe! Why do we have 1 and the Americans have 3? That doesn't make sense. If the Americans are always playing the majority of major championships on home soil in conditions and play that suit them, they will always win more! The result is that the European golfers are then put under immense pressure when playing a Major as the US players are at a huge advantage. It's all about situation and confidence, which Europeans just don't have. Westwood could win, as he is one of few who has the determination and bottle!

Chris Hanson says...

Remember that it is only in the last decade or so that a decent European challenge has been invited to the USPGA. Before the world rankings there might just have been a handful, up against 50 or 60 top Americans. We must have a decent chance this year of breaking our duck. Sergio is probably our best bet, since he plays a lot of golf in the US and did well at Oakland Hills in the Ryder Cup.

The reason the Europeans don't play well at this tournament is that it is always set up in accordance with all the courses on the pga tour which is the bread and butter for Americans. See no change this time, and my tip is Mickelson or outside shot Anthony Kim.

It is a real mystery why no European has won the USPGA and we do have a poor record in the US Open. Many times of course we have been very close, Monty on his own could with a bit better luck have had 2 of each. There are now so many leading Europeans but Garcia appears to be in the best position to take advantage of Tiger's absense.

Gary Newton says...

It's true, it's a poor record. But we haven't really done too well at the US Open either - just Tony Jacklin's solitary win since the war. We won the Masters regularly for a couple of decades but even that has dried up since 1999. We have got chances this week, though, not least because plenty of our boys won the Ryder Cup at Oakland Hills four years ago. My tip? Ian Poulter.
