Don Henley says...

Paddys a true irish legend, its true that if woods had been fit it would be harder to win these tournaments but he won one with him there so i think Harrington can be a great nemesis for woods and heres one for ya. Wood's playoff record reads 10-1, guess who defeated him????

Sunday's golf tournament was the most exciting and riveting between two great golfers in the world. Garcia must know that you can loose a battle and still win the war. The event on Sunday had us golf fans riveted to the screen. I have never seen such an exciting game as this was in a long time. I believe that Garcia is the next Seve Vallestro. Congratulation on a Great Golf Tournament!!!!

reading through these posts, it is good to see there are more intelligent and sporting people out there than you would think. but, there is always one - my message to richard browning is this - wake up and get rid of the chip on your shoulder, to suggest garcia lost it and padraig didnt win it shows an amazing lack of an intelligent let alone a sporting brain!! garcia cant handle the pressure, padraig can and has proven once gain when it comes down to it he has the right stuff. to shoot two 66's in a row and have someone as ignorant as that to suggest it was lucky is unreal and would say it is only because it is not a british player. harrington has done what some of the best golfers in the world over the last 70 odd years couldnt do, only the most cynical and xenophobic fools out there would try to diminish it by using the tiger is injured excuse, that is pathetic and typical of begrudgers! harrio is not injured, tiger is, tough!! tiger played in the open in 2007, still beaten! it is not harrio's problem that tiger is not physically able to compete, i think it says more about padraig's ability to maintain his own body than anything else, he is a true legend and to those that cant recognise that, go and stick your head in the sand...

Awesome. I have bitten my nails to the quick watching the last 18 holes. Has he got what it takes to fight the tiger - absolutely! Did it in Japan and Carnoustie! Maybe now he'll get the recognition he deserves - no flash trousers or dodgy belt either!

Harrington no doubt won the tournament over Sergio. Of course it did not help that Sergio made bogey on 16 and parred 17, but Padraig made all the key putts and absolutely deserved it. I'd love to see Sergio win because he really is the best ballstriker in the game, but yesterday was Harrington's day for sure. Great job

Steve Hennessy says...

It takes a highly cynical person to suggest Garcia lost it as opposed to Harrington winning it. The ultimate begrudgery. The man shot 66, 66 in the last two rounds. Garcia bogeyed after being in the water on 16, missed a birdie putt on 17, and bogeyed 18. Harrington did the oppposite and therefore won. The best player won, because under the pressure he had the killer instinct. To suggest anything else is ignorance, nothing else. The best players win because they don't make mistakes. That's what sets them apart. Harrington, as he did in the last two opens won, because he has the bottle and the resolve under pressure and he also has to resolve to bounce back from adversity (i.e. the 18th at Carnoustie). The best players win because they don't crumble under pressure. Garcia crumbled under pressure because he could not shake Harrington and got desperate. To make a statement that winners win because other players are losing is a joke. That's what sets the winners and losers apart. That's the very essence of competition. Jean Van De Velde lost an Open. Garcia did not. Wake up and gain some perspective. Harrington - if you're reading this - you're a genius!

What a great win for Padraig!! He's worked extremely hard throughout his career and is now reaping the rewards. He's got to be considered the best modern day player behind Tiger ofcourse. I think i can speak for every Irish person when i say your doing the whole country proud Padraig! Thanks for the great memories over the past 3 weeks!!!!Come on THE IRISH

I think this is great for Padraig as there have been many questions asked of him over the past number of years. Harrington has proven himself time and again. When he won in Carnoustie in 2007 people were saying it was down to Garcias implosion under pressure. I disagree as there are a number of golfers chasing these titles and Harrington has shown he has the mental game to match any of the other golfers out there. His retention of the Open at Birkdale this year highlighted Harringtons quality but the way he went about winning the USPGA was top drawer. When the pressure was on he looked more relaxed than anyone else out there. Garcia couldn't handle the pressure Harrington put on him after the 9th. I think credit where credit is due and for such a dedicated sportsman who puts so much time and effort into his practice he should be recognised as Europes best. It is disappointing to here people belittle his first major but no one can question his ability now. What I would like to see now is Harrington and Tiger slug it out on a Sunday in a major.

great result for Irish Golf and for Pod but he needs to win consistent majors to challenge for the number 1 spot. Dont get me wrong im irish and a huge harrington fan and he is beginning to show his class with major victories, he will be remembered as a great no matter what, 3 majors in 14 months...not many others have done that .....fair play to him, he deserves his moments of glory.

As an irishman I am delighted for Harrington, his will to win is unbelievable and he definitely psyched Garcia out this time. The putts on 17 & 18 were signs of a true champion and i think Tiger or no Tiger he will win more majors. Heres hoping..

What a Irish Living Legend, he has put Ireland firmly on the map of the Golfing World. His nerve a desire to win the tournemnt in the last 3 holes was sure Genius. Congrats Paul you did us proud now just don't stop here theres plenty more of were that came from!!!

SIMPLY PUT, If the accepted measure of a golfers success is the numbers of majors won, then our own Paddy has to mentioned in the same breath as Ernie Els, Tommy Armour, Billy Casper, Hale Irwin, Phil Mickelson, Larry Nelson, Nick Price & Payne Stewart. Now that is some company. Harry Vardon (7) and Nick Faldo (6) are the ones to catch now for Padraig. If he can get to 7 or 8 majors, he quite simply would be the best golfer ever produced in Europe. WOW !! GO ON THE IRISH - OLE OLE OLE OLE

Derek O'brien says...

Mentally-the best player in the world. His third shot on the eighteenth was the best shot ive ever seen. The pressure was on to save par and he did it magnificantly. Congratulations Padraig-a true legend.

Well what can you say about Harrington. Absolutely superb. What a back nine. two rounds of 66 is one hell of an achievement on that course. id say he is the greatest Irish sportsman of all time! as david Lvingstone said last night.....Roll on Tiger v Padraig. And going down the back nine, i'd back Padraig!!! Ireland, Ireland!!!

Ned Baggley says...

i think pod must be the best irish sports man ever he is a class act bring on woods, pod must be one of the best putters in golf and his will to win is second to none i think garica wishes harrington was out injured in the last 13 months well done harrington and what a credit to the sport of golf.

Tim Boxall says...

Well Done Paddy, the guy is a genius! How refreshing it is to see such a "normal" bloke win majors and show he is the best. He is better than Tiger at the moment ! WHY? coz Tiger's injured and PH is not.. simple as that ! Keep it going Paddy, no reason why you can't go on to lift the Masters in 09 and then really stuff it to the yanks by winning the US open too. What a great back 9 last night, and how brilliant to see 2 such great shot makers battling it out in the US with no yank in sight (except for Ben Curtis of course who did well but can't drive the ball!) BRING ON VALHALLA

Damien Morris says...

congrats harrington on a thrilling victory. to do a combined 8 under par for two rounds on one day is nothing short of spectacular.great 2 c golf on the back nine of the the highest quality from harrington and garcia.the atmosphere was like being at a ryder cup.i hope you continue to win more majors as you deserve it after all the hard work you put in.
