Bernhard Langer claimed the Senior Players Championship on the second hole of a playoff with Jeff Sluman at Fox Chapel in Pittsburgh.

The German held a three-shot lead going into the final round but produced his worst 18 holes of the week, closing with a 70 to give his rivals the chance to close.

He made four birdies and two bogeys on the front-nine but then dropped a shot at the 10th and had a double bogey at the 12th to properly open the door.

But a birdie at the short 17th proved vital at the end and at least ensured he went into extra holes against the American, who had closed with a 65 to join Langer on 15-under.

They both parred the long 18th first time around and Langer appeared to be in trouble when his approach ended in the rough after they went back to the final tee to continue the playoff.

But he hit a lovely pitch to five-feet and made the putt after Sluman had seen his own birdie attempt roll just wide of the hole.

The victory is 56-year-old Langer's third of the year and his third major title on the Champions Tour.
