Davis carded a three-under-par 67 on Friday and is one shot ahead of Matt Jones, who also carded a 67.
Former Palm Beach Gardens winner Dudley Hart is a further shot back after shooting a 66.
John Mallinger and Ben Crane are tied for fourth - three shots back - world number four Ernie Els is in a pack of five at three under par.
Londoner Davis dropped his first shots of the tournament with a double-bogey at the seventh and a bogey at the ninth, but birdies at both ends of his round on Friday have put him in contention for a first PGA Tour win.
Davis said: "Around this course, I think you'd need about a 20-shot lead with one round to go.
"You know around here, it's going to come down to the last nine holes, just the way the course is set up. I can't see anybody getting a six-shot lead out there tomorrow.
"I'm sure every player's got a few hiccups around here.
"But it's a welcome return to form and it's where you want to be."
Thirty nine-year-old Hart, who is looking to repeat his victory of 2000, double-bogeyed the par-three 17th to prevent him sharing the lead, but the former champion was not too downhearted.
"You don't birdie six in a row very often," Hart said. "You know, everybody out here has gone through stretches where they have done that.
"It's just hard to describe, really. Just things are clicking right, and the putts are falling, and good things are happening."
Overnight leader Luke Donald shot a four over par 74 to fall six shots back, while defending champion Mark Wilson missed the cut after shooting a three-over-par 73 for the second consecutive day.
