Ross Fisher believes he and England team-mate Ian Poulter are heading into this week's World Cup in the kind of form which can see them improve on last season's sixth-placed finish. World Cup stats package For the second year running the duo will team up to represent England at Mission Hills Golf Club in China and both are high on confidence. Poulter won in Singapore at the beginning of November, while Fisher was victorious at the Volvo World Match Play Championship in Spain the same week. And Fisher feels those triumphs will stand them in good stead in China this week. "I don't think we got off to a great start last year but we went from strength to strength and finished really strong," Fisher explained. "But we were both still disappointed not to finish inside the top three or even win. "Now we are coming back both in good form. Ian just had a win, I've just had a win and we have both had good seasons on the European Tour. "We have got to go out and play aggressive golf in the fourballs and play steady golf in the foursomes. This week is all about having fun and having a go and I'm sure we will do that."

Ryder Cup boost

The duo's recent victories mean that both currently stand in the automatic qualifying places for next year's Ryder Cup and Fisher is hoping a big performance at this week's tournament could strengthen his case in the eyes of European captain Colin Montgomerie. "Hopefully I can play myself into the Ryder Cup team but all I can do is take one tournament at a time and hopefully that will be good enough," he continued. "I will think about the Ryder Cup more next year when it is a Ryder Cup year, but this is obviously a good stepping stone. "If me and Ian can have a good week, maybe Colin will be looking at it. I've also won the Match Play which is a massive boost for me."
Tough competition
Fisher and Poulter form part of a strong-looking 28-team field with Swedish duo Henrik Stenson and Robert Karlsson back to defend the crown they won 12 months ago. World number eight, Sergio Garcia, pairs up with Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano in what appears a formidable-looking Spain team, while Ireland are also amongst the favourites thanks to their line-up of Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell. Defending champion Stenson certainly feels there will be tougher competition this time around, stating: "It's a stronger field this year for sure. It feels like you could find the winner in 10, 12, 14 teams."
