This week's event, that features 64 of the world's leading golfers, was first staged in 1999 and is being held at Ritz-Carlton for a third straight year.
As ever, a top class field has arrived in Arizona hoping to win the six successive matches needed to lift this prestigious title.
What was once a tournament dominated by Americans, the Match Play has enjoyed a more cosmopolitan feel in recent years.
Ian Poulter is the defending champion, having beaten fellow Englishman Paul Casey in last year's 36-hole final.
The top seed this week is Lee Westwood whose record in this event is less than impressive.
Westwood has never won back-to-back matches in the Accenture-sponsored event, and has a mediocre win-loss record of 6-10.
So who will be the usual suspects in the Arizona desert this week?
Paul Casey: His win-loss record at Ritz-Carlton is an excellent 10-2. However, on both previous visits has had to go home clutching the runners-up cheque.
Stewart Cink: Usually reaches the latter stages of this event and was a runner-up to Tiger Woods in 2008.
Geoff Ogilvy: The only player, other than Tiger Woods, to win this event more than once. The Australian has also been a runner-up in Arizona (over The Gallery course) and has a brilliant win-loss record in this tournament of 18-3.
Jeff Overton: The young American is making his WGC Match Play debut on the back of an impressive first outing at last October's Ryder Cup where he enjoyed a 50% record from four matches.
Ian Poulter: Has developed a reputation for being an aggressive, competent matchplayer in recent years - both in the Ryder Cup and at this event.
Tiger Woods: The three-time winner whose only previous appearance on this course resulted in a second round 4&2 beating by Tim Clark in 2009.
