Fijian handed Open place but facing fitness race

Vijay Singh will have the chance to play in next week's Open Championship at Sandwich if he is fit enough to compete. The Fijian, 48, was joint runner-up the last time The Open was held at Royal St George's in 2003 when American Ben Curtis emerged as a surprise winner. Former world number one Singh pulled out of last week's AT&T National in Pennsylvania with back trouble, but is one of five players who have been added to The Open field off the world rankings. Singh is joined by Americans Webb Simpson, JB Holmes and Steve Marino and Japan's Yuta Ikeda who will also get the chance to play at the season's third major. The places became available because the players who won this season's big events - Rory McIlroy (US Open), Charl Schwartzel (The Masters), KJ Choi (Players Championship) and Luke Donald (BMW PGA Championship) were already exempt for Sandwich - and because past champions Sir Nick Faldo and Greg Norman have opted not to play. Australian Brendan Jones is now first reserve and will be waiting to see whether Tiger Woods declares himself fit and ready to play at Sandwich.
