Ewart Shadoff, who was known as Jodi Ewart until her January marriage to sports broadcaster Adam Shadoff, carded six birdies and made her move after the turn with four birdies in a row from the 11th hole.
However a bogey at the 16th cost her the outright lead and saw her fall into a three-way share of first place.
Norway's Suzann Pettersen and South Korean Na Yeon Choi are also on four under with Amy Yang of South Korea and Sweden's Anna Nordqvist both one shot further back.
Defending champion Sun Young Yoo had a dismal finish, the South Korean slumping from level par after 11 holes to five-over 77 by the end of her round.
America's world No 1 Stacy Lewis opened with a one-over 73, while world No 2 Yani Tseng hit a level-par 72.
Ewart Shadoff, who is ranked 110th, said: "I just played really consistently, got into a really good birdie train in the middle of my round, which was nice.
"I was just hitting a lot of greens and making putts, so I'm happy with how I'm playing and excited to get out there tomorrow morning."
