Couples, starting on the back nine, made an incredible seven birdies in 11 holes at an already waterlogged Fox Chapel Golf Club in Pittsburgh to move to 11 under-par overall.
The 1992 Masters champion and former world number one, who started the day on four-under, could not complete his round, however, as a sudden downpour suspended play. And with more inclement weather looming, the decision was taken to finish for the day.
Overnight leader John Huston was two shots further back and is four-under after 15 holes, while Jeff Hart holds the clubhouse lead after 36 holes on seven-under overall alongside Duffy Waldorf, who has four holes of his second round remaining.
Colin Montgomerie is still in with a chance of victory on his Champions Trophy debut and sits on four-under after 12 holes of his second round.
The Scot, who carded 69 in round one, made four birdies and a bogey before play was halted and is currently in a tie for 10th.
Sandy Lyle, who still has four holes to complete, is back on even par for the tournament while the big shock so far is the poor position of Bernhard Langer who lies a full 13 shots off the pace. The German has six holes to play of his second round.
