The four-time major champion was scheduled to play in the annual Tiger Woods-hosted exhibition in California, which coincides with the lucrative Nedbank event in his homeland.
But the 44-year-old has taken a "family decision" to tee up in Sun City for a record 17th time as he chases his fourth victory in the tournament.
"I'm really looking forward to coming back and playing such a special event," said Els, who is the all-time leading money winner at the Nedbank Challenge.
"It was actually a family decision. Liezl, Samantha and Ben are with me for a short while and it made a lot of sense to compete at Sun City."
Els is not eligible to play in this week's DP World Tour Championship in Dubai after playing in only one of the three European Tour Final Series events.
He has urged the Tour to change the qualifying criteria for next season, and chief executive George O'Grady is expected to announce a new format on the final day in Dubai on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Els will be replaced by WGC-HSBC Champions winner Dustin Johnson in Woods' event at the Sherwood Country Club, which starts on December 4.
