Germany's Bernhard Langer leads the Senior Open by seven shots after the second round at Royal Porthcawl.
The two-time Masters winner carded a five-under par 66 to move to 11 under overall and put clear daylight between himself and the rest of the field.
Langer, who hit successive birdies on his final two holes on Thursday to take the overnight lead, recovered from a bogey on the first hole to hit six birdies and put himself in a strong position on Friday.
"I played very smart, very aggressive, then very smart and I was fortunate to some extent, but I have played very well the last two days," he told the European Tour's website.
"It wasn't the kind of start I wanted today, but from that point on, I settled down and I played some really good golf.
"I missed a couple of opportunities earlier on, but then I started to play a little better as well and brought it home to the clubhouse with six under par from that point on, which I'm very pleased with overall."
Colin Montgomerie's bid for a third straight senior major this year got going on Friday as he catapulted up the leaderboard to share second place going into the weekend.
The Scot notched five consecutive birdies, eight in total, as he matched Langer's round of 66 but it was not enough to eat into the overnight gap the German had over him.
Englishman Chris Williams hit an eagle and two birdies, but three bogeys blighted his efforts as he dropped five shots further behind Langer to go level with Montgomerie.
Spaniard Pedro Linhart sits one shot further back and just ahead of American duo Bob Tway and Tom Watson, who are both on two under.
