Reignwood LPGA Classic: Stacey Lewis returns to China to take first round lead

Stacy Lewis returned to the scene of her bitter disappointment in China last year to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Reignwood LPGA Classic.

The American birdied five holes on the back nine to shoot a seven-under 66 on Thursday in the tournament which carries a $2.1million purse.

Last year, in the inaugural Reignwood Classic as the LPGA made its first trip back to China since 2008, Lewis went to the 18th on the final day with a single stroke lead over China's Shanshan Feng.

But she lost by the narrowest of margins as Feng saw her penultimate shot take a fortunate bounce in front of the green, hit the flag and land three feet from the hole.

With the home crowd going wild, Lewis missed her 18-foot birdie putt and could only watch as Feng drained her eagle putt to claim the victory.

In round one this year, world No 1 Lewis holed seven birdies in total to lead by one from Caroline Hedwall of Sweden, who also carded seven birdies, but hit a bogey on the par-four fifth.

Sun Young Yoo and Jenny Shin are tied for third place after carding 68s, with fellow South Korean Inbee Park tied in fifth after a round of 69. Park sits second behind Lewis in the Race to the CME Globe season-long points rankings.
