The US Open champion held the opening-round lead in Shanghai and briefly grabbed the advantage on Saturday, only to see his hopes unravel on one nightmare hole.

Koepka began the day a shot off the lead but moved ahead of Dustin Johnson by birdieing his first three holes, as the world No 1 responded with gains at the fourth and seventh.

With the pair tied for the advantage, Koepka went way left off the tee at the par-five eighth and lost his ball deep in the trees.

Worse was to come after firing his provisional down the middle of the fairway, as he sprayed his fourth shot into more tree trouble and was forced to take another drop.
