Less than a decade on from getting the all-clear from Leukaemia, Jonathan Thomson will get to tee it up at the highest level this season after progressing through the European Tour’s Qualifying School.
The 21-year-old birdied his final two holes of Final Qualifying at Lumine to end in a tie-for-18th and become one of 33 players to secure their playing privileges for the 2018 campaign.
Thomson endured extensive chemotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia during the ages of seven and 12 but has since gone into remission, before the Rotherham Golf Club member decided to turn professional last year.
As well as finishing in the top 10 on the EuroPro Tour standings and claiming a maiden professional title, Thomson also impressed with a tied-54th finish at the Czech Masters and a share of 25th at the Portugal Masters.
The 6ft 9in professional will become the tallest player in European Tour history when he features this season, with Thomson relishing the chance to test himself regularly on the top-tier over the coming year.
"Golf was a game that took me away from everything," Thomson told Sky Sports. "It (Leukaemia) certainly made a tougher person and in this industry I'm in is a very good trait to have.
"This dream has definitely come a lot earlier than I expected but it's fantastic and I'm looking forward to the challenge. "
