"It's a funny old game," said the 37-year-old Welshman. "I played the pro-am on Wednesday and thought the course was too difficult and I had no chance. I thought if I could get a decent finish I would be chuffed.
"To be holding this trophy is just mad."
Donaldson survived a late scare when he bogeyed the 18th, giving Justin Rose and Thorbjorn Olesen in the final group the chance to tie his score of 14-under with a birdie. But, to his relief, both missed.
"It's pretty surreal really," he said. "I played really good all week, particularly well today, but got away with murder there up the last to be fair.
"I thought one of them would hole, if not both to be honest. I was just thinking 'it's going to be a play-off' but then both putts slid by and it was my week I suppose."
Donaldson had to wait 255 appearances to win his first European Tour event (last year's Irish Open) but it's taken him just 14 more to add a second.
He said: "It's like buses, I suppose! It's crazy. It took a while and I had four years in the wilderness and to come through last year and win the Irish Open was fantastic. To top it off with this is awesome."
