Tyrrell Hatton reflects on his play-off penalty at the WGC Match Play

Tyrrell Hatton was eliminated from the WGC-Dell Match Play after picking up a penalty during a three-man play-off in Texas.

Hatton needed just a halved match against Rafael Cabrera-Bello to progress into the last 16 as Group Ten winner, but was beaten 2&1 by the Spaniard to slip in to a three-way play-off.

The Englishman got within 12 feet of the pin with his approach to the first extra hole, but joined Cabrera-Bello and Charles Howell III in missing his birdie putt.

Hatton then accidently touched his ball as he was preparing to tap-in for par, but holed out without moving his ball back to its original position to be handed a two-shot penalty.

"Obviously a disappointing day to lose this morning and then have a great chance to get through to the last 16," Hatton told Sky Sports. "I've just clipped the ball and knocked it a centimetre forward.

"Maybe it's karma for how I behaved on the golf course over the previous two days. All I know is that it's a tough pill to swallow at the moment."

With Hatton eliminated, Howell III won the play-off at the fifth extra hole to book a knock-out clash with Group Seven winner Jon Rahm.

Rules official Steve Carmen said: "What happened was he placed his putter behind the ball and caused the ball to move and then he putted from the new position.

"We have a local rule in effect that if it's an accidental movement on the putting green you can replace the ball (but) he didn't replace the ball so he's played from the wrong place, so there's a two-shot penalty."
