Record-breaker leads the way at Indianwood

Tom Kite has set a US Golf Association championship nine-hole record with a 28 and finished at five-under 65 to take the early first round lead at the US Senior Open. Barry Lane of England and Scotland's Andrew Oldcorn led the European challenge, finishing five shot back with 70s. Kite matched the lowest nine-hole score of his career on the front nine at Indianwood. He had a second-round 28 on his first nine last year at the Champion Tour's Hickory Classic. His three-shot lead was cut to one stroke over Lance Ten Broeck when a poor flop shot out of ankle-high rough led to a double bogey at the seventeenth Tom Pernice Jr heads into the second round on Friday with a 67 and Mark Calcavecchia and Damon Green are a further shot back.
