The PGA Tour rookie had rounds of 65 and 64 to take a two-shot lead at the halfway stage at Sedgefield Country Club and could manage only a one-over-par 71 on Saturday.
But that was good enough to give him a share of the lead heading into Sunday alongside fellow American John Huh.
The 23-year-old Reed - bidding for his maiden PGA Tour title - dropped out of the lead after four bogeys in his first 12 holes but a run of three straight birdies from the 14th put him back at the top of the leaderboard on his own before a bogey at 18.
Reed overshot the final green from the middle of the fairway and failed to get up and down.
He is tied at the top of the leaderboard alongside Huh, who bounced back from a triple-bogey seven at the second with three back-nine birdies and an up-and-down from sand at the last for a level par 70.
Jordan Spieth was a shot clear at 10 under on the par five 15th but he found the water and took six as playing partner Reed made birdie four.
Zach Johnson also held the lead at one stage before dropping back into a share of third on nine under alongside Spieth and Bob Estes.
The former Masters champion picked up five birdies in his first 14 holes to climb to the top of the leaderboard on 10 under par but bogeyed the last and signed for a 66.
