Australian Jason Day is a doubt for the Open Championship at Hoylake due to his reoccurring thumb injury.
The world No 6 was suffering with the problem in the lead up to this year's Masters but opted to play through the injury.
Never in the hunt at Augusta, he finished a respectable 20th but aggravated the injury when playing a shot at the par five 13th and needed further time to let it heal again.
Day stayed off the course for over a month before returning at the Memorial Tournament in the first week of June.
That helped get him get sharper for the US Open and Day added to his excellent record in the majors by sharing fourth even though he was never in with a shout of putting pressure on the dominating Martin Kaymer who led from start to finish.
Day, who won the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship in February, then finished 18th at the Travelers Championship before missing the cut at last week's Quickens Loans National.
He was due to play in this week's Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia but his thumb has flared up yet again causing him to sit it out.
The latest setback now casts doubt on whether the two time PGA tour winner will be able to tee it up at Hoylake in two weeks' time.
Day has played in three Opens but has yet to taste the same success he's achieved in the other three, US-based, majors.
He was 60th on debut at St Andrews in 2010, 30th at Royal St George's in 2011 and 32nd at Muirfield last year.
The 26-year-old missed the 2012 Open at Lytham after his wife gave birth to their son Dash.
