The 40-year-old from Pittsburgh seems like everything America would wish for in a Ryder Cup competitor: tough, reliable, inscrutable and fearless. The trouble is that his record in six appearances belies that reputation. As an ever-present in the team since his debut in 1997 he has won just eight matches, halved three and lost 13. The only plus is that at Valhalla in 2008 he finally posted a profit - winning twice, halving one and losing one match. The natural assumption is that Furyk would make the natural foil for many a partner and yet foursomes and fourballs appear to be his weakness. In six singles he has four wins, one half and just the one defeat; that translates to 12 defeats (and just four wins) in 18 matches with partners. Some American players mutter that the President's Cup possesses a more relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. Perhaps Furyk is one such player because his record in that event is notably superior: 10 wins, six halves and only two losses. It will be interesting to see if a) he continues to be perceived as a safe pair of hands by his captain; and b) he belies that reputation once again.
