One of McIlroy's most refreshing characteristics is his honesty, but when asked about facing Tiger Woods in the Ryder Cup he might have been too candid. "I would love to face him," he said. "Unless his game improves I think anyone in the European team would fancy their chances." To be fair to the 21-year-old Northern Irishman he probably would love the chance and his record in team golf, limited though it is, indicates that he'd not shirk the challenge. In the 2009 Seve Trophy he had captain Montgomerie licking his lips as he and Graeme McDowell formed a strong partnership that reaped three points from four matches (McIlroy added a fourth point in his singles match). His experience of the Walker Cup was slightly less thrilling - taking place on his home turf at Royal County Down he claimed only two of a possible four points and was disappointed in his failure to inspire GB&I to victory. He has recorded just two professional victories but his talent has shone on the big occasion as he has recorded three top-three finishes in his last five starts in the major championships.
