Anthony Kim earned America their first point of the singles matches as he comprehensively beat Sergio Garcia 5 and 4 in a rather ill-tempered affair.
The contest seemed to take on an edgy atmosphere right from the first green after neither player conceded despite both having put their approaches to no more than two feet.
However, it was Kim who was galvanised by the needle with the young American opening in blistering style with four threes to move one up.
A wayward drive from Garcia caused him to fall further behind at the sixth and when he twice found the water at the par-five seventh he was three behind.
Three halves ensured the Spaniard stayed just about in touch, but the match swung decisively in Kim's favour at the 11th as Garcia missed from two feet for par to gift his opponent another hole.
Four up became five at the 13th as Garcia made another bogey to leave Kim dormie and when the American got up and down from off the green at 14 for a half the match was over.
Kim ended up a total of eight-under for his 14 holes while Ryder Cup specialist Garcia ended the week without a win to his name.
