Karlsson eases past Leonard

Last updated: 22nd September 2008

  • Karlsson and Leonard shake hands after Swede's win

Robert Karlsson's fine form continued into the singles matches as he secured Europe's first point with an emphatic 5 and 3 triumph over Justin Leonard.

The Swede produced a string of birdies in Saturday's fourballs and picked up where he left off against Leonard who, by contrast, struggled badly with his normally reliable putter.

After the first three holes had been halved, Leonard missing a great chance to move ahead at the short third, Karlsson hit the front following a delightful pitched second that ended stone dead at the fourth.

He extended the lead with a ten-foot birdie putt at the sixth and Leonard then missed from inside three feet at the next to stay two behind.

Karlsson took full advantage as a wonderful tee-shot at the short eighth set up another birdie, while a three at the tenth eased him four holes clear.

Leonard finally found his range with the putter at 11, but only for a half, and having spurned presentable birdie opportunities at 13 and 14, the American fell to defeat when another putt trickled past at 15.
