Justin Rose completed a solid week's work with a polished 4 and 2 victory over world number two Phil Mickelson.
The Englishman made it three points from a possible four and justified captain Nick Faldo's faith in him, pitching him in what was always going to be a tough match in game four.
The pair were closely matched early on in a quality affair, but the tide turned against the American at the sixth when a five-foot par putt ran round the edge of the hole before staying out.
Rose quickly doubled the advantage at the next courtesy of a great pitch to the holeside, but then had to get up-and-down from sand at the eighth to remain two up.
The lead was three when Rose birdied the 10th and all of a sudden Mickelson was struggling to find his game - another birdie for the European at the 12th was enough to extend the advantage further.
But somehow, the American started to claw his way back - Rose missed from around seven feet to win the match on 14, and at the next it was Mickelson's turn to finally win a hole with a five-footer and prolong it.
Both found the difficult 16th green with their approaches but it was Rose to play first, and he calmly rolled in his putt from 25 feet to clinch the win.
