Weekley star of the show

Wilson blown away in rookie clash

Last updated: 21st September 2008

  • Weekley: Fooled nobody

Oliver Wilson ran into a brick wall in the shape of Boo Weekley in game six, the American winning the battle of the rookies by four and two.

The European had won on his only previous appearance this week when he holed a snaking putt on the 17th in Saturday's foursomes, but he wasn't given a look-in by a pumped up Weekley.

The Floridian has thrived on his cheerleader status in his first Ryder Cup and he backed up his antics with some inspired to golf to go through the turn in 29 shots.

Remarkably it was Wilson who took the early lead by holing out for birdie at the second but Weekley levelled immediately by rattling in a 10-footer.

The next was halved with birdies but the American took the initiative at the fifth as cries of 'Boooooo' rang out across the course.

There was becoming an air of inevitablility about the match and Weekley doubled his lead at the seventh with a sensational eagle from the sand.

Wilson could do little about it and another Weekley birdie gave him a three-shot cushion at halfway, which became four at the next.

The American could have gone five up but left his eight foot birdie attempt short at the 11th, and although Wilson finally got one back it was only a matter of time before Weekley closed it out.

And when the end came it was in style - a 14 foot birdie putt slamming into the back of the hole to win the 16th and the match.

"It's pretty awesome, it's a dream come true," he told Sky Sports. "I fed off the crowd all week long, it's so unreal you get chill bumps.

"It's better than shooting a deer - the adrenaline you get is unbelievable."
