Jim Furyk secured the winning point for the United States as he scored a 2 and 1 victory over Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez.
Former US Open champion Furyk was two up after three holes courtesy of birdies at the first, after an approach to two feet, and the third following a Jimenez bogey.
But the Spaniard won the fifth with a par and then holed from a bunker for birdie on the sixth to get back to all square.
However, Jimenez was never able to get in front and went three behind when he bogeyed the 10th and 11th and Furyk birdied the 13th.
Furyk then scrambled an amazing par on the 14th, chipping from wide of the green away from the flag and using the contours of the putting surface to get to within six feet. He holed the par putt and Jimenez missed a short one for birdie.
The 15th was halved in birdies as Furyk followed his opponent in from seven feet.
Jimenez briefly raised hopes of a famous fightback when a par four on the 16th was good enough to win the hole and keep the match alive, but the 44-year-old could not find a birdie on the 17th and the match and the Ryder Cup was over.
