Sam TorranceQuotes of the week
Sam Torrance believes Colin Montgomerie will make a "great captain" after the Scotsman was announced as Europe's skipper for the 2010 Ryder Cup.
Montgomerie was appointed as captain for the Celtic Manor event earlier on Wednesday, as Europe seek to win back the trophy following their disappointing defeat to America in Valhalla last year.
And Torrance, who led Europe in 2002, believes the 45-year-old's passion for the Ryder Cup will help him succeed in what will be a tough examination in Wales.
"It means more to him than any other event - and with his wealth of experience, he'll make a great captain," Torrance told Sky Sports News.
"Colin will do whatever is necessary with the players, whether it be bringing them down or picking them up. He'll do anything that is asked of him, and that's imperative."
Montgomerie will continue to play on the European PGA Tour until the tournament - and Torrance, who led Europe to a 15.5-12.5 win at the Belfry in 2002, believes that could help rather than hinder Montgomerie's captaincy.
"Colin has taken that decision - and if he wins five tournaments then it would create no problems; instead, we'd just have a great player as captain," he added.
Pavin's view
America Cup captain Corey Pavin believes old adversary Montgomerie will prove a sound choice by Europe.
"I congratulate Colin on being selected as the captain for the European squad for the 2010 Ryder Cup," he said.
"We have known each other for quite a long time and have competed against each other in a few matches. I am sure he will represent Europe very well."
