It might have taken him some time to finally win a major but now that he has four to his name, Mickelson knows that his legacy will be defined by his performances in the grand slam events. And unless he adds a US Open title he will consider his career unfulfilled because he has finished second in the event on no less than five occasions. At times others have stepped up to beat him: the late Payne Stewart holed a 15 foot birdie putt on the last to beat him at Pinehurst in 1999. On other occasions he's beaten himself: he was one clear playing the final hole at Winged Foot in 2006 but took double bogey to lose by one. That defeat really hurt: "I am still in shock I did that. I just can't believe I did that. I am such an idiot," he said later. Mickelson continues to receive criticism for his perceived wild streak on the course, but he also possesses supreme talent and he showed that most recently with a brilliant performance on the weekend to win in Houston the week before Augusta. After so many near misses in this event there wouldn't be a more popular winner.
